Boingo has expanded its hotspot service to airlines. Through an arrangement with Gogo, in addition to 350,000 earth-based Wi-Fi hotspots, Boingo subscribers will now be able to sign in to Gogo using their Boingo information, and surf the Internet in-flight while on an airplane as well. The arrangement covers over 1,100 flights daily with nine air carriers.
Gogo offers 1.5Mbps peak speed Internet access on major airlines including Virgin America, United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, AirTran, US Airways and Alaska Airlines. When combined with business flights, this represents over 6,000 flights daily.
Boingo access through Gogo is not free. Customers must also be Gogo subscribers. Otherwise they must pay the regular Gogo access fees. Notebook and tablet users will be charged $5, $10 or $13 depending on the duration of the flight. Smartphone Boingo subscribers will have to pay $5 or $8, depending on the flight length.
