Autodesk Announces Scaleform for Mobile Development

Autodesk today announced new versions of its Scaleform middleware targeted at mobile developers. Scaleform provides a means of producing user-interface environments as well as 2D games. The new software provides a Flash-based gaming and application platform and plugs into the Unity game engine, allowing designers to develop once and distribute across multiple operating systems quickly.

The new version of Scaleform provides developers with three methods of mobile game and app development. The Unity game engine is a plug-in allowing developers to create UI and menu screens using flash. Developers using the Unity engine do not need to be versed in C++ programming, and the engine is integrated with Scaleform from the start. Also, Scaleform’s software development kit is well-documented and can be integrated into a range of third-party and proprietary mobile engines. Finally, Scaleform’s middleware Flash playback capabilities allow developers to produce games and applications for iOS and Android devices.

Scaleform is currently available in an evaluation version on Autodesk’s Gameware website. The software will be available in the Autodesk eStore this summer, and it will be licensed as a Unity Engine plug-in or mobile SDK for $295 per platform, per seat.
