Android 4.0, AKA ICS, Now Installed on 16% of Devices

Version 4.0 of Google’s Android operating system is now installed on about 16 percent of Android devices. The news was revealed yesterday in a post on the official Android site. Android 4.0 moved past Android 2.2 into the second-place spot, but version 2.2 remains the most widely-installed version of Android by a large margin.

Google’s figures are based on the number of Android devices that have accessed Google play over the past two weeks. The numbers show that versions 2.3.3 through 2.3.7 account for 60.3 percent of devices, while version 4.0 and 4.0.2 hold 0.1 and 15.8 percent shares, respectively. Version 4.1 — the version included on Google’s Nexus 7 tablet — is installed on less than 1 percent of Android devices.

Version 4.0’s install rate has been accelerating in recent months, as multiple companies have been releasing updates for their devices. The continued popularity of version 2.x, though, is a major concern for Google, as developers cite fragmentation in the Android user base as a primary obstacle to developing for Google’s platform.
