AMD has officially detailed the high-end cards in its new GPU lineup, as it continues to compete against offerings from Nvidia. Following on from its launches at the start of last month, the R9 290 and 290x are said to be heading to retail soon, with both greatly exceeding the performance of the previous leader, the R9 280x.

The PCI-E 3.0 R9 290 is equipped with 2,560 stream processors, up to a 947MHz engine clock, a 4GB GDDR5 512-bit memory configuration, one six-pin and one eight-pin power connectors, AMD’s TrueAudio Technology, and DirectX 11.2, OpenGL 4.3, and Mantle support. The R9 290 will be available at retail before the end of November for $399.

The extreme high-end R9 290x has slightly more stream processors with 2,816, up to a 1GHz engine clock, a 4GB GDDR5 512-bit memory config, 5Gbps memory speed, and one six-pin and one eight-pin power connector. Both it and the R9 290 supports AMD TrueAudio Technology, and DirectX 11.2, OpenGL 4.3 and Mantle support.
