LiquavistaAmazon has purchased touchscreen company Liquavista. The company, previously owned by Samsung is one of the developers of low-power color e-paper technology. No terms of the deal are currently known. Samsung was previously said to be seeking sale of the manufacturer due to the acquisition not meeting expectations of Samsung executives.

A statement by Amazon confirmed the acquisition. In its statement, Amazon said that it is “always looking for new technologies we may be able to incorporate into our products over the long term. The Liquavista team shares our passion for invention and is creating exciting new technologies with a lot of potential. It’s still early days, but we’re excited about the possibilities and we look forward to working with Liquavista to develop these displays.”

Previous reports pegged the company as worth less than $100 million. The company’s “electrowetting” technology is suited for use in e-readers, mobile phones, GPS devices, portable media players and cameras due to its high visibility in all light conditions. The technology is also said to be highly-scalable, and can eventually be applied to larger screens such as those in notebooks and TVs.
