T-Mobile used the start of the Mobilize conference to show off two new Android flagships while talking down the prospect of an iPhone 5. The HTC Amaze 4G, also known as the Ruby, is one of its first phones to support 42Mbps HSPA+ and gets closer to actual 4G speeds at 8Mbps on average and 20Mbps at peak. The 4.3-inch phone is a close cousin of the Sensation 4G but gets a faster 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S3 as well as T-Mobile-specific Sense customizations borrowed from the myTouch 4G Slide, such as the extra-fast, multi-shot, and sweep panorama camera modes.

It continues to carry an eight-megapixel back camera with 1080P capture as well as a front 1.3-megapixel camera. Netflix and T-Mobile TV ship as third-party apps alongside HTC’s Watch movie rentals.

T-Mobile has also confirmed the special changes made to its Galaxy S II version. Its addition also gets 42Mbps HSPA+ data but is also the only one in the US to switch from Samsung’s own 1.2GHz Exynos chip to the same dual-core, 1.5GHz Snapdragon S3 as the Amaze 4G. The phoen alsoe features an 4.5-inch screen as well.

Both the Amaze 4G and Galaxy S II will go up for pre-order on October 10 and hit stores October 12. The two will have steep prices: the Galaxy S II will cost $230 on contract, but only after a $50 mail-in rebate. Amaze 4G owners will pay $260 with the same rebate.
