ABC is bringing back long-running game show “Pyramid,” this time with host Michael Strahan and with more money on the line. The network announced the “Pyramid” revival on Saturday, ahead of ABC’s panels at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, Calif.
Now titled “$100,000 Pyramid” — signifying the prize money for each epiosde of the modernized take on the game show — Strahan will be joined by celebrity guests and sports stars who will team up with contestants from across the country to compete throughout the season. The show will be taped in front of a live audience in New York.
“Growing up, ‘Pyramid’ was one of my favorite shows to watch with my family,” said Strahan of the show that launched in 1973 and was first hosted by Dick Clark. Strahan added, “Watching the celebrities and players become a competitive team is always fun to see. I’m looking forward to bringing it back for the new generation to enjoy as well!”
Strahan, of course, is a strong member of the ABC family as co-host of “Live! With Kelly and Michael” and a regular on “Good Morning America.” ABC has an impressive duo of game show hosts in Strahan and Steve Harvey, who hosts “Celebrity Family Feud,” which was renewed for a second season today. Bringing back “Pyramid” is a safe bet for ABC based on audience familiarity with the show’s brand, not to mention the network’s success with the game show genre in “Celebrity Family Feud,” which ranked as the top summer show for the network and the highest-rated new series of the summer across broadcast.
Aside from hosting, Strahan will also serve as an exec producer with Constance Schwartz and Vin Rubino. The show is produced by SMAC Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television. “$100,000 Pyramid” is set to debut this summer with a 10-episode first season.
