Google has modified the iPad front-end for Gmail, adding a new “stacked card” interface for the e-mail service. Previously, two toolbars were on screen to control actions on conversations. One controlled selected conversations, however, while the other handled an open ones, which Google acknowledges was potentially confusing.

Under the card system, the second toolbar has been removed completely. Selected conversations are now stacked in the right-hand panel, where they can be sorted, archived or deleted.  The updated interface is currently available only in US English.

Slate announced today the release of its iPad app, offering iPad users the opportunity to engage with Slate content in a way that’s best suited for the medium. Slate’s iPad app is free to download, thanks to an exclusive launch sponsorship by Marriott Hotels & Resorts, which lasts through October 11.

Developed internally by Slate Group staffers, Slate’s iPad app gives Slate readers ready access to the features they love: Slate articles, videos, podcasts, and Slate’s news aggregator, The Slatest. While it’s long been possible to read Slate on the go—at mobile.slate.com or through Slate’s iPhone app—the Slate app for iPad offers an improved portable reading experience, one designed to take full advantage of this new medium.

Highlights of Slate’s iPad App

  • A clean, uncluttered, easy-to-use interface that optimizes the reading experience for iPad.
  • True integration of multimedia, (video and audio), within its content pages including daily videos from Slate V and the ability to play Slate’s popular podcast series in the background while browsing other Slate content.
  • The ability to directly share Slate content within social media sites via email, Twitter and Facebook.
  • A home screen designed to showcase Slate’s top stories while also allowing readers to browse Slate’s Politics, Arts, Life, Business & Tech, and Science sections.

“Since its inception, Slate has been an agenda setter in the digital media space,” said Jacob Weisberg, Slate Chairman and Editor in Chief. “We know that our audience looks to us for innovation in journalism, and with our iPad app, we truly deliver on those expectations. We’re raising the bar on what users should expect in media apps for iPad by bringing smart content to smart readers, and really delivering it in a way that takes full advantage of the capabilities offered by this new device.”

“Slate and its new iPad app are a perfect fit for the Marriott Hotels customer – the achiever who is an early adopter of technology and is highly mobile,” said Michael Dail, senior director of marketing for Marriott Hotels & Resorts. “As a brand, we raise the bar on what hotel guests should expect in a travel experience, much like Slate readers expect more from their favorite news site.”

Slate worked with Medialets to develop the innovative ad units seen in the iPad application.

Slate’s iPad app is now available for download at the app store for iPad for free.

AlwaysOnPC Comes to iPad and Android

August 6, 2010 by Laura
Filed under Applications, Cell Phones, Gadgets, iPad

AlwaysOnPC recently announced version 1.0 of their Virtual PC app for iPad and Android. With more than 40 pre-installed programs including a mobile office suite and Firefox, AlwaysOnPC aims to put the power of a desktop computer inside any iPhone, iPod Touch, and now iPad or Android phone. AlwaysOnPC delivers a combination of productivity tools and capabilities that frees users from their desktops. Using Open Office, users can edit, copy and paste between apps, and save most common file types including Word (.doc and .docx), Excel (.xls, .xlsx), and Powerpoint (.ppt, .pptx) and more.

The lack of Flash has been a highly visible debate for Apple and a disappointment for users, until now. AlwaysOnPC delivers an iPad and iPhone Flash Player with Firefox so users can finally browse the whole Web on their device. Although it does not yet support audio or full motion video (these improvements are coming soon) customers still enjoy access to their favorite sites like Facebook games, Google Analytics, and more from their phones.

Hosted in the “Internet Cloud,” AlwaysOnPC offers an encrypted SSH connection to/from all devices. For users this means both security and high performance for many common tasks. For example users can open large files, such as PDF files, PowerPoint decks or Excel Spreadsheets of 100Mb or more from an uploaded file, email attachment or an online storage folder such as Dropbox up to ten times faster than competing mobile solutions.

Best of all, the features that people are familiar with on their computer can now be accessed in a similar way on AlwaysOnPC via their mobile phone or tablet, for example:

  • Copy and paste text & graphics between apps like Office, Firefox, email, & photos
  • Add browser toolbars like Google or Yahoo!
  • Click to open email attachments directly into the office or imaging apps
  • Multi-task: run multiple Office apps, email, IM and browser tabs and windows at once
  • Install Firefox Addons (a customer favorite is xMarks, which syncs passwords and bookmarks between the desktop PC and AlwaysOnPC, letting you browse without typing from your phone!)
  • Dropbox folder included– just login! (Other online storage services can be accessed via Firefox)
  • Image editing and Vector-graphic drawing programs
  • Games like Chess, Blackjack, Majongg, Sudoku & more
  • 2 GB of online storage

Pricing and Availability:

AlwaysOnPC is available now in the iTunes Appstore as two applications (one for iPad, one for iPhone/iPod-touch), and in the Android Marketplace in the Productivity category for a special introductory price of $9.99.
